Starting A Poultry Farming Business In Nigeria.

Poultry farming has risen to become one of the most lucrative businesses in Nigeria today. This aspect of livestock farming, if set-up and managed properly, provides legitimate continuous income for entrepreneurs within a short period of time. There are over 160 million consumers in Nigeria and over one billion in Africa. This provides a large, growing and sustainable market for poultry farmers in Nigeria, and Africa in general.

Anyone can go into poultry farming irrespective of your educational background or financial status. You can start at any level, big or small, and grow as you master the ropes of the business.

One of the advantages of poultry farming is the quick rate at which the chickens grow. They grow very fast, unlike larger livestocks like cattle, goats, sheeps, etc. A day old broiler chicken (reared for meat production) can reach maturity and be ready for market within just 6 to 8 weeks. A layer chicken (reared for eggs production) on the other hand will start laying eggs between the ages of 20 -24 weeks.

New poultry farmers choose to major in any of the following niches:

  1. Broiler Farming: Broilers are fast growing chickens that can be reared from day old and sold within just 6 – 8 weeks. They are mainly reared for meat production.

Profitability

At an average cost of N250 per day old chick, and N3,950 per bag of broiler feeds, a farmer can easily make an average profit of N300 per bird reared.

Example, with good management practice, a poultry farmer that puts 1000 day old broiler birds can easily make a profit of N300,000 within a period of 6 weeks. The farmer can do the same cycle, 8 times in a year.

Persons intending to venture into broiler production are strongly advised to get a business plan on broiler farming so as to know in detail what is needed and what is expected from the business.

  1. Layer Farming: Layers are reared for egg production. They typically start laying eggs within the ages of 20 – 24 weeks. New farmers that want to focus on egg production are advised to point of lay (POL) birds. With POL birds, your birds will start laying eggs within just 3 – 6 weeks depending on the age of the POL birds. This will allow the farmer to quickly start getting returns on investment capital.

Profitability

At an average cost of N1,500 per POL bird, and N3,300 per bag of layer feeds, a farmer can easily make an average profit of N200 per bird monthly.

Example, with good management practice, a poultry farmer that puts 1000 POL birds can easily make a profit of N200,000 every month by the time the birds start laying eggs. The birds will continue to lay eggs for about 18 months, after which the quantity of eggs they lay will reduce to a point where it will no longer be profitable to keep them. The farmer can easily sell the birds as spent layers, and restock his/her farm with new POL birds.

Persons intending to venture into egg production are strongly advised to get a business plan on layer farming so as to know in detail what is needed and what is expected from the business.

Getting Started

Depending on the level you plan to start, you will need to acquire a space for your poultry farming business. You can utilise your backyard if you are starting small, say 100 – 200 birds. You will need to buy or rent a piece of land if you want to go bigger. It is advisable to get your land in remote areas that have good proximity to the city.

Erect your structures, putting into consideration the poultry pens, cages, store, staff room and quarters, etc. Procure equipment such as feeders, drinkers, battery cages, shovels, wheelbarrows, etc.

Purchase your stater birds (day old chicks, outlets, or point of lay) feeds, vaccines, and drugs from reputable sources.

If you are managing the farm yourself, get an experienced farmer or veterinary doctor you can always reach out to for help whenever the need arises. Doing this, you will be surprised at how quickly you gain experience and master the ropes of the business.

I wish you all the best in your endeavours.
